SERMON  TEASER:
What does it mean to be "marked"?  The French used the Royal Fleur-de-lis symbol as a brand on criminals who were sentenced to the death penalty for crimes against the crown.  This way if a criminal escaped, anyone who found them would know that this person needed to be turned over to the law.  During the Holocaust, the Jews were required to wear a star-of-David patch sewn to their clothes at all times, so that anyone who saw them would know that they were Jews, even from a distance.  In the early church, the fish symbol, and the cross, were signs used to identify those who followed the way of Jesus.    Today, the fleur-de-lis is merely a design for decorations and flags.  Wearing one doesn't mark you as either royal or condemned.  The star of David symbol is not only on the Jewish flag, but has also been used by Islamic mystical sects as well as kabbala.  And all 4 symbols (fleur-de-lis, star of David, Fish, Cross) have been staples in jewelry design, and even symbols put on cars and trucks, by both people who believe in God, and those who don't but who still find the symbols fashionable.  So how then do we know when a mark is genuine?  The Jewish people were known as the people of another mark - circumcision.  Every Hebrew life formed by passing through the mark at conception!  Yet, a people "marked" as God's people in the flesh, were often far from God in their hearts.  Are we the same way today?  Join us this Sunday as we take a look at the true mark of God's people, and get to the heart of the matter!
